Press Release: Introducing The Polygon Outside

The Polygon Gallery Encourages Art for Everyone with New Summer Series “The Polygon Outside”

Weekly film screenings and family-friendly art activities featured in the Gallery’s summer lineup

Vancouver, BC (May 26, 2022): The Polygon Gallery is pleased to present The Polygon Outside — an immersive, community-driven summer series taking place on Cates Deck, located on the waterfront directly in front of the Gallery. Imaginative and educational, the event debuts at the end of June with a seasonal film series and family-friendly art activities. Admission to The Polygon Outside events are by donation, courtesy of BMO Financial Group.

Central to The Polygon Outside is an outdoor film series called Deckchair Cinema, which treats audiences to a summer of al fresco film screenings. Hosted for eight Thursdays beginning June 23, the screenings commence at sunset, and will be complemented by music and special guests leading up to curtain time.

Deckchair Cinema features a two-storey screen showing classics like John Waters’ Hairspray, fan favourites such as Enter the Dragon starring Bruce Lee, and award-winning documentaries like Summer of Soul. Attendees to Deckchair Cinema can make themselves comfortable by bringing their own blankets or low chairs to the screening. A concession stand will offer tasty snacks and drinks from local wineries and breweries, which can be enjoyed on Cates Deck, a public zone for alcohol consumption.

In addition to Deckchair Cinema, The Polygon Outside summer programming includes Kids First, an outdoor expansion of the Gallery’s ever-popular children’s program. Hosted for eight Sundays from 11-3pm beginning June 26, Kids First is a recurring opportunity for families of all kinds to create an art project inspired by The Polygon’s summer exhibition Ghosts of the Machine.

“We’re excited to expand our programming outside this summer. Kids First and Deckchair Cinema continue the Gallery’s long history of inspiring and provoking cultural insight through diverse, adventurous programming. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to welcome the whole community,” says Jessica Bouchard, Associate Director of The Polygon Gallery.

The Polygon Outside is made possible with support from the City of North Vancouver, and runs June 23 to August 14.
