Collisions: Recent Work By Joyce Neimanas

Curated by  Karen Love

Joyce Neimanas has relentlessly queried our notion of 'reality' as read through the photographic image. Using the photograph in a non-precious manner, manipulating its properties, pushing and pulling at its so-called 'truths' (with paint, chemicals, staples, ink, pin-holes, knife-cuts and more) she questions our response to representation and through this tool, investigates the strained condition of relations within a media-saturated world.

The technical process used in these recent works results in, to use the artist's words, random collisions of images and words, echoing what often seems to be the nature of social intercourse: 'to collide', 'to strike or dash each other'. She brings to this an element which both softens and sharpens her critical edge - a sense of humor. We are at play while we ponder the peculiarities, inadequacies and inequalities in our social games.
