Witness

M. Magdalena Campos-Pons, Eugenio Dittborn, Mona Hatoum, Lani Maestro, and Colette Whiten
Curated by Renee Baert

There is a long trajectory in Western art history of the artist as engaged witness, dating back to at least the 15th century but in its more modern sense beginning with Goya. The works in Witness, however, occupy a 'post-modern' world and the mass-mediation, mobility and fragmentation of the contemporary world forms a subtext within several of these works. The works are informed by the artists' diverse cultural perspectives - Canadian, Chilean, Cuban, Phillpina and Palestinian.

Supported by the Canada Council Foreign Visiting Artists Grant.

A catalogue was published by Presentation House Gallery in conunction with the exhibition, with text by curator Renee Baert.
