Indian Princesses And Cowgirls: Stereotypes From The Frontier

Curated by: Marilyn Burgess and Gail Guthrie Valaskakis

Representing the stereotypes of ‘Indian princesses’ and ‘cowgirls’, this exhibition offers a selection of historical images from the turn of the century to mid 20th century, derived from North American popular culture (archival photographs, posters, postcards and more).

Events

Saturday, September 6, 2 pm | Joint lecture by curators Marilyn Burgess and Gail Guthrie Valaskakis

October 12th, 7:30pm | High-Tech Teepee Trauma Mama, a performance by Rebecca Belmore

A performance that poignantly addresses the more personal issue entailed by colonial racism and racist representations. By creating a story-based journey through a present-day landscape of racial segregation and gender inequality, Belmore connects the stereotype of cowgirl and Indian princess and shows them to be two sides of the same coin.
