Diane Arbus, until her death in 1971, was a major influence on documentary photography in North America, and has since had a far reaching effect on the development of the medium. Seeking out fringe groups, primarily existing on the edges of society, she brought an honesty and directness to the documentary photograph. Her personal work has become quite well known, however, until now, little has been seen of her important magazine commissioned work.

In the 1960's decade, Diane Arbus published approximately 200 photographs in such venues as Esquire, Harper Bazaar and London's Sunday Times Magazine. Diane Arbus: Magazine Work offers 79 of the photographs commissioned as photo essays, along with fifteen of the actual magazines.
