Speaking Pictures With Shellene Paull

Please join us in marking the Summer Solstice with our Speaking Pictures programme featuring Shellene Paull, a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) Elder, knowledge keeper and land protector. She will be in conversation with programme curator Joelle Johnston, The Polygon’s Indigenous Liaison and Community Outreach Coordinator who is also a member of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. They will be sharing photos of Squamish ancestors: specifically Master Carver Tommy Moses and Squamish weaver, Hakstn/Skwét7skiya (Harriet Johnny). The late Tommy Moses’ totem pole, which was installed at Cates Wharf near Lonsdale Quay from 1948 until 2020, is currently being restored by carver Darren Yelton.

Storytelling and light refreshments from 11am until 1pm.

RSVPs are helpful

Speaking Pictures invites Indigenous elders to come and speak to the public about photographs that highlight the stories, histories, and landscapes of the North Shore. Inaugurated in 2024, this programme takes place on the Sunday closest to each solstice and equinox: March 24 for Spring, June 23 for Summer, September 22 for Fall and December 22 for Winter. The changing of seasons is marked with gathering, storytelling and the sharing of food. The seasonal changes invite us to reflect on the past and grow into the future.
