Phulkari Workshop + Tour With Simranpreet Anand

Join artist Simranpreet Anand for a special Phulkari embroidery workshop. Phulkari is an embroidery and weaving practice originating in Punjab, and it is featured throughout Anand’s exhibition Living with the Eternal, currently on view at The Polygon. Loosely translating to “flower work” (phul, “flower; kari, “work”), Phulkari has been passed down through generations of Punjabi women for decades.

Anand employs Phulkari in her work to relate to cultural history, community, and women’s labour. In this unique, artist-guided workshop, attendees are welcome to learn more about this practice in a collaborative setting, and to make their own Phulkari embroidery.

Tour starts at 6:00pm
Workshop at 6:30pm

RSVP required, as space is limited. Supplies will be provided. Please consider making a donation with your RSVP, as any amount helps us cover material costs.

About the Artist
Simranpreet Anand is an artist, curator and cultural worker creating and working between the unceded territories of the Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo peoples (Surrey, BC) and the traditional territories of the Kalapuya people (Eugene, OR). Her art practice is informed by familial and community histories, often engaging materials and concepts drawn from the histories of Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora, and their disruption by global capitalism, colonialism and migration. Anand is a faculty member in Visual Arts at Lane Community College. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Michigan, and a BFA with Honours from the University of British Columbia. She is the winner of the 2022 Philip B. Lind Prize for Emerging Artists.
