Nothingness By Anju Singh

Nothingness is a composition performed live by Anju Singh using electronics, violin, synthesizers, field recordings and an instrument custom built for the piece to create a sound experience that explores Sartre’s Being and Nothingness. Using the text’s philosophical concepts as a framework and lens to work from, Nothingness intends to dialogue with the themes presented in Jeremy Shaw’s Phase Shifting Index.

The performance will take place outside on Cates Deck, in front of the gallery.

Followed by the Deckchair Cinema screening of What We Do In The Shadows at 9:15pm.

About Anju Singh
Anju Singh is a composer, musician, sound artist and media artist based in Vancouver, BC who works with string instruments, traditional instruments, electronics, found sounds, and custom-built instruments to create compositions that explore tension, conflict, and bring a critical lens to how we understand and perceive aesthetics. Anju's practice intends to dive deep into an exploration of the texture of sound with a focus on putting a microscope on timbre and micro-sounds or unwanted sounds, such as the brush of a bow against a string. She explores these sounds through the use of extended or experimental techniques, electronics, non-musical materials, and electronic processing. In her work, these elements are composed together to express the relationship of mutual respect between music and noise in her work.

Anju has presented her work and/or performed across Europe, in Brazil, in Mexico, in Canada and in the USA. Her work has been supported by festivals, galleries, and art centres including Fylkingen in Stockholm, Sweden; Send + Receive Festival in Winnipeg; the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Active/Passive on Galiano Island.
