Film Screening - Fela Kuti: Music Is The Weapon

Join The Polygon Gallery for a screening of the documentary film Fela Kuti: Music is The Weapon, followed by a talkback with Toyin Kayo-Ajayi. The statement "Music is the Weapon" was coined by Nigeria's Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who believed that music gives an account of the society and can be wielded for positive societal change.

About Toyin Kayo-Ajayi
Toyin Kayo-Ajayi was born in Ekiti State, Nigeria, in a rural village. He came from an impoverished background, however, Toyin has always been innovative and thinking out of the box. He started working to help his family when he was 8 years old. He was later discovered by a soccer scout, and for many years traveled the world playing for various professional teams. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Ondo State University in Nigeria. In 2001, Toyin arrived in Canada to play soccer. Since then, he has called Canada home. Toyin is a farmer, entrepreneur, fierce advocate for his community, and a proud African. Toyin has always been giving back and supporting the African community in BC and Canada. He started his band, Kara-Kata Afrobeat Group in 2012 in order to celebrate his fellow country man and social justice warrior, Fela Kuti, and to share African culture with a wider audience. The band has travelled to many Canadian provinces hosting and participating in festivals and cultural events. Toyin has his own African snack business, and a current events live-streaming show. In 2017, he started Kara-Kata Afrobeat Society of Canada, a community organization that serves his people through outreach, cultural events, and business mentorship. He recently launched the Canadian Black Farmers project, which is being piloted in Mission, BC.
